Mission Complete… So, What Gives Dave D?

by Shelly Riley

My month long mission is complete – I met the word goal for National Novel Writing Month (that makes me a winner!)alas, the book is not completely finished.  But there is no longer a time constraint so I’m back to baseball writing now.

I wasn’t completely holed up in a dark space during my writing frenzy – I have been paying astute attention to the Detroit Tigers Hot Stove… a few points of interest before the meat of the story…

Is it over yet?

by Shelly Riley

Unlike my last few entries that required me to do some semblance of thought and planning, this one is going to be a shoot from the hip kinda entry.  Sorry, my brain hurts a little.  Perhaps it has something to do with the lack of baseball in my world this time of year. Or maybe it has something to do with my most hated team winning the World Series (UGH! – still reeling and cringing)  Yes folks, end of season lack of baseball depression has wrapped it’s cold dead hands around my world and is holding on tight.

Shame comes to the “Righteous Franchise” in Detroit

by Shelly Riley

Being that I’m the resident baseball geek at my place of employment (no one knows my name really, I’m just the crazy baseball girl on the east side of the building)  I was slightly shocked by the steady stream of foot traffic that made it’s way to my cubicle today.  “Did you hear about Miguel Cabrera?”  “Why would he do that?” “What was he thinking?” “He just lost my vote for MVP.” “I’m going home and burning my Cabrera jersey tonight…” “Did you know this was going on?” and various other forms of those statements were whispered to me as I tried to cut some purchase orders so my stores could have plants to sell.  My co-workers somehow think that because I am a super fan, I have the inside scoop on what is going on with every player on the team. Finally, about an hour before I left work, a co-worker came up to my cube and asked “What do you think about all this?” and I let him have it…

Talkin’ Tigers

by Shelly Riley

So things are not going quite the way we expected them to for the AL Central race.  Most Tigers fans would have loved to seen this race sewn up weeks ago; but alas, this is not the case.  We hold a 2 game lead over the Evil Empire (Twinkies) for the AL Central Crown with 3 games left in the season.  Hopes are high in the Motor City – but fear is too.

“There’s a souvenir for the little girl from… Charlevoix”

by Shelly Riley

“He’s out for excessive window shopping – looked at one too many”

Should I stay or should I go?  I had a rough day at work on Wednesday.  My entire morning and half the afternoon was spent debating in my head whether I should go down to Comerica Park that night to see my Tigers take on the Royals, and see Ernie Harwell’s Thank You speech in person or, should I go home and watch it on TV?

Retirement 101 – Don’t cheat your fans…

by Shelly Riley

The only thing I think my mother loved more than Chi Sox baseball was the Heroes of Lambeau Field – yes, my mother is a Green Bay Packers fan.  My mother is a wonderful mother and she didn’t believe in child abuse.  This is why she raised all seven of her children to be Packers fans rather than fans of the ever-losing home state team of the Lions.

Hello Radioland – It’s me, TV!!!

by Shelly Riley

I sat in the stands at Comerica Park last Saturday with a very dear friend watching our beloved Tigers get trounced by the Evil Empire (also known as the Twinkies of Minnesota).  After a pounding rain all day and the promise of stifling hot weather to come, we enjoyed sitting in the park and chatting before the game, catching up on the things we had missed since seeing each other a few days earlier.

Ball Park Etiquette for Dummies

by Shelly Riley

Ok… I’m going to lay it all out on the line.  I am a Baseball Fan… a BIG one.  I appreciate spending my time in the friendly confines of just about any ball park I can get into.
