| Breaking News | | Saturday, October 18th, 2008: Indians, Expos Advance to LCS The Montreal Expos and Cleveland Indians won their respective Game 5 matchups to advance to the League Championship Series, and will face each other in the LCS for the right to meet the winner of the Pittsburgh Pirates/Boston Red Sox matchup in the Seamheads Historical League World Series. The Expos scored six runs over the last four innings and held off a late Braves rally to defeat BOS-MIL-ATL 6-4. Al Oliver went 4-for-4 to finish the series with a .636 average, and Gary Carter knocked in his first two runs of the LDS with a sixth-inning single that knotted the game at 2-2. Eddie Mathews, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, homered in the sixth to tie the game again at 3-3, but the Expos scored another in the seventh and two in the eighth to put the game away. The game wasn't without its share of controversy, either, as Braves starter Kid Nichols was inexplicably r moved from the contest after tossing only 77 pitches in five shutout innings, and clinging to a 2-0 lead. The Braves' bullpen couldn't keep the Expos hitters at bay, however, and Montreal emerged victorious.
Meanwhile in Cleveland, the Indians used a four-run, eighth inning rally to break a 3-3 tie with Toronto, then withstood a two-run, ninth inning rally by the Blue Jays to hold on for a hard-fought 7-5 victory. Albert Belle supplied most of Cleveland's offense with two home runs and four RBIs, including a clutch three-run shot off reliever B.J. Ryan in the eighth, and Joe Jackson added two more hits and drove in his eighth and ninth runs of the series to lead all batters. Ernie Whitt hit his second homer of the series and drove in two runs, and Lloyd Moseby doubled and plated two to lead the Jays.
| | Tuesday, October 7th, 2008: Larkin Gets Number 2500 It was a day of mixed emotions for CIN shortstop Barry Larkin, who collected his 2500th hit in the club's 5-3 loss to PIT. Reds and Pirates fans alike cheered Larkin as he reached base after his milestone hit.
"I wish the score had been different," Larkin said after the game, "but it was a great moment. The standing ovation was really special... even the fans wearing Pirates caps were cheering me."
Larkin was 1-4 on the day.
In his career Larkin has hit .295 with 2500 hits, 212 home runs, 1019 RBIs and scored 1403 runs. | | Monday, October 6th, 2008: Robinson Goes on Rampage Against Pirates It wasn't just another day at the ballpark for Frank Robinson. It was a very special day, one that many players never experience. But he did. Robinson went on a tear and cracked hit after hit off PIT pitching.
When the dust settled on the diamond at Great American Ball Park, he had a career 5-5 day and something he will long remember. And the CIN Reds had a 14-7 victory over the Pirates.
"Yeah, it'll be something nice to tell the grandkids, but it won't get me a hit tomorrow," he joked in the postgame interview.
F. Robinson doubled in the 2nd, hit a two-run home run off D. Giusti in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th and hit an RBI double in the 8th.
Thus far in 2008 Robinson is hitting .303 with 25 home runs, 115 RBIs, 103 runs scored and has compiled a .351 OBP. | | | Injuries | | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | | LF Barry Bonds | torn groin muscle | 3 months | On DL, eligible for return (60-day DL) | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 97-57, .630 PCT | | Position in Division | 1st, - GB | | Record at home | 46-31, .597 PCT | | Record on the road | 51-26, .662 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 6-9, .400 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 27-20, .574 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 30-21, .588 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 67-36, .650 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 8-2, .800 PCT | | Record in April | 16-6, .727 PCT | | Record in May | 15-10, .600 PCT | | Record in June | 14-10, .583 PCT | | Record in July | 16-10, .615 PCT | | Record in August | 12-12, .500 PCT | | Record in September | 18-7, .720 PCT | | Record in October | 6-2, .750 PCT |
