Did You Know?
- At 41, Cy Young was the oldest pitcher to throw a no-hitter until 43-year-old Nolan Ryan tossed his sixth no-hitter in 1990 (vs. A's on June 11, 1990 At Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum).
- Young walked leadoff man Harry Niles, who was thrown out trying to steal second, then retired the next 27 batters to record his third career no-hitter (vs. Reds on September 18, 1897 at League Park III in Cleveland; vs. Athletics on May 5, 1904 at Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds in Boston).
- Young had three hits and drove in four of the Red Sox's eight runs.
- Boston leadoff hitter Jack Thoney was hit by a Rube Manning pitch and was replaced by Gavvy Cravath who made a couple of nice running catches among the four balls he caught.
- Young's no-hitter came exactly a month after he allowed only one hit to Jerry Freeman of the Washington Senators on May 30.
- Young is one of six pitchers in big league history to throw at least three no-hitters, along with Nolan Ryan (7), Sandy Koufax (4), Larry Corcoran (3), Bob Feller (3), and Justin Verlander (3).
- This was the third of three no-hitters caught by Lou Criger (Cy Young vs. Athletics on May 5, 1904 at Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds; Bill Dinneen vs. White Sox on September 27, 1905 at Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds).
