Did You Know?
- This was the first of seven career no-hitters thrown by Nolan Ryan and first of two in 1973 (vs. Tigers on July 15, 1973 at Tiger Stadium in Detroit; vs. Twins on September 28, 1974 at Anaheim Stadium; vs. Orioles on June 1, 1975 at Anaheim Stadium; vs. Dodgers on September 26, 1981 at the Astrodome in Houston; vs. Athletics on June 11, 1990 at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum; vs. Blue Jays on May 1, 1991 at Arlington Stadium).
- The game was played under protest after Royals manager Jack McKeon argued that Ryan was illegally lifting his foot off the pitching rubber.
- In Ryan's previous start he faced only six White Sox batters and allowed five runs in a third of an inning before coming out of the game.
- The next day he threw two hitless innings in relief and earned his third and final career save.
- This was the third of three no-hitters caught by Jeff Torborg (Sandy Koufax vs. Cubs on September 9, 1965 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles; Bill Singer vs. Phillies on July 20, 1970 at Dodger Stadium).

Rank among 317: 158
Opposing Starter: Charlie Hough
Catcher: Brent Mayne
Plate Umpire: Ted Hendry
Attendance: 25,164
Time of Game: 2:30
Did You Know?
- Saberhagen admitted after the game that he began thinking about his no-hitter as early as the second inning when he realized his control and velocity would make him difficult to hit.
- A fifth-inning drive to left-center by White Sox right fielder Dan Pasqua was originally ruled a hit by official scorer Del Baker when Royals left fielder Kirk Gibson had the ball glance off the top of his glove, but it was changed to an error after Baker watched several replays and determined it was a catchable ball.
- Brent Mayne is one of 10 modern-era no-hit catchers who also made at least one pitching appearance in his career (2000: 1 G, 1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 0.00 ERA).
