Did You Know?
  • This was the first of two no-hitters thrown on June 29, 1990--Fernando Valenzuela of the Dodgers completed a no-hitter against the Cardinals at Dodger Stadium only a few hours later.
  • It was only the second time in baseball history that two no-hitters were thrown on the same day: Cincinnati's Ted Breitenstein held the Pirates hitless on April 22, 1898 at League Park II in Cincinnati while Baltimore's Jay Hughes turned the trick against the Boston Beaneaters at Oriole Park III in Baltimore.
  • This was the first of two no-hitters caught by Terry Steinbach (Eric Milton vs. Angels on September 11, 1999 at Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis).

Did You Know?
  • This was the second of three career no-hitters thrown by Justin Verlander (vs. Brewers on June 12, 2007 at Comerica Park in Detroit; vs. Blue Jays on September 1, 2019 at Minute Maid Park in Houston).
  • Verlander lost his bid for a perfect game in the eighth inning when J.P. Arencibia walked after a 12-pitch plate appearance.
  • Arencibia was erased on a double play and Verlander ended up facing the minimum 27 batters.
  • Avila is one of nine modern-era no-hit catchers who also made at least one pitching appearance in his career (2018, 2019: 3 G, 4 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 2.25 ERA).

Did You Know?
  • James Paxton is the first Canadian-born pitcher to throw a no-hitter in Canada.
  • This was the third of three no-hitters thrown in 2018 and all three were thrown in different countries.
  • Paxton no-hit the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario; Sean Manaea no-hit the Boston Red Sox at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on April 21, 2018; Four Los Angeles Dodgers no-hit the San Diego Padres at Estadio Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico on May 4, 2018.
  • Paxton's no-hitter is considered by some to be the 300th in MLB history, but it depends on which camp you're in--those who recognize Joe Borden's National Association no-hitter in 1875 as the first (vs. Chicago White Stockings on July 28, 1875 at Jefferson Street Grounds in Philadelphia) or those who recognize George Bradley's National League no-hitter in 1876 as the first (vs. Hartford Dark Blues on July 15, 1876 at Grand Avenue Park in St. Louis).
  • Major League Baseball's Special Baseball Records Committee (SBRC) ruled in 1968-1969 that the National Association would no longer be recognized as a major league, although it's still recognized as the first professional baseball league.

Did You Know?
  • This was the third of three career no-hitters thrown by Justin Verlander (vs. Brewers on June 12, 2007 at Comerica Park in Detroit; vs. Blue Jays on May 7, 2011 at Rogers Centre in Toronto) and two came against the Blue Jays, making him one of only three pitchers to throw multiple no-hitters against the same team (Addie Joss vs. White Sox on October 2, 1908 at League Park III in Cleveland and on April 20, 1910 at South Side Park III in Chicago; Tim Lincecum vs. San Diego Padres on July 13, 2013 at Petco Park in San Diego and June 25, 2014 at AT&T Park in San Francisco).
  • Verlander became the sixth pitcher to throw at least three no-hitters along with Nolan Ryan (7), Sandy Koufax (4), Larry Corcoran (3), Cy Young (3), and Bob Feller (3).
  • He walked the second batter of the game--Cavan Biggio--then retired the final 26 to complete the no-hitter.
  • According to Fan Graphs, based on exit velocity and launch angle only two balls had a better than 12% chance of being a hit.
